X + Y = ?

Personally, I like math. But once I got to high school and numbers started to combine with alphabets, I got lost. Some might find it simple and understand it right away when the teacher explains it. But for me, I get stuck and confused at times.

I can only ask the teacher so many questions to the point where they get me more confused than I was before. And I do want to try and do well in school as much as I can. So, I looked up math tutorials online to help me. I started watching videos on Khan Academy to follow me through step by step. I always liked learning alone and this was a perfect way to do it.

The best part about this site was that I can always rewind the video and watch it again. This site had example problems that I can solve while I am learning the chapter. And guess what else it included? A guiding tool to help when you get stuck doing the problem, like hints and etc. It also gives a brief explanation of why you have to do the problem in a certain way and the outcome of the answer.

To be honest, this was better than school! I can sit home and learn what I needed off of videos. But that would get boring and I would probably become more lazier than I already am. Although, I am glad that I found another way to learn subjects that I struggle with. I can take quizzes/tests also on this site and improve my skills. I think there are so many different ways you can learn something in this world and it should not matter how you learn it. As long as you are learning.

  1. Ravii, I related to your post when I came to high school math was so hard for me. From freshman year and half of sophomore year. Slowly I learned more and more how to study better and to go over homework and redo the answers I got wrong. When math is difficult for me I also watch video to understand. I do not agree with you that watching videos is better than school. At least for me because when the teacher explains it I think it is different then the videos. I like watching video to get a better understanding of what is going on. Do you only use Khan Academy to learn? You should consider also using YouTube for some videos as well. I also watch videos for other classes to get a better understanding as well. Do you only watch videos for math? Or do you watch it for other class as well?

  2. Muhadasa, I agree with you on redoing the wrong answers and going over the homework again, but I look at my notes more often. I was joking about videos being better than school, lol. Videos do help to get a better understanding of the subject. And no, I sometimes use it for science as well.

  3. Ravii, I can relate to your struggles with math. I personally never liked watching math videos because I like having someone sitting next to me to work through the problem. When I'm watching a video, it automatically puts me at a disadvantage because I don't like learning off of a screen. I'm glad it Kahn Academy works for you! What I do when I don't understand something in math is ask my mom. She's very good in math, but what's better is she understands the way I learn. I would suggest finding someone who learns the same way you do because they will know how to explain the concepts to you in a way that makes sense. It goes a lot quicker!

  4. Kristin, I know exactly what you mean by having someone next to you to help you through the problem. But my mom is not good at math, so I don't have much help at home than I do at school. At times, I do have classmates that do help me out if the teacher can't explain it to me. But I'm glad there are tutorials online to guide me through when I'm stuck.

  5. Ravii, I liked your post, and I like to learn alone as well, it helps me learn faster when im doing it myself. I have been to khans acadamy before, they have a lot to offer, and is very helpful. I dont go there often, but when i do, its worth it. Hopefully it continues to help you.

  7. Ravii, I know many people who have the same frustration that you do when it comes to combining the alphabet with numbers. While I am not one of those people, I do understand the advantages of utilizing resources outside of the classroom for extra help. Similar to you, I find that video tutorials are a great way to grasp specific concepts better. I am not familiar with Khan Academy, but I do use YouTube (like Muhadasa) and highly recommend it. It is quick and easy to find dozens of videos that relate to high school math as well as other subjects on this site. Plus, the videos can be watched repeatedly!

Another great way to study that I often use is rewriting all of the things that I have trouble remembering on a piece of paper or a note card and studying from that. This not only helps you memorize the information by writing it, but it is also then all laid out in one place which is very efficient. Usually I do this before quizzes or tests in math class. Besides watching videos or taking online practice tests, what other ways do you learn when you are at home?

    1. Mark, I am glad that I have found people like you that can relate to my situation. You should really try out Khan Academy! It helps you a lot, maybe even more than Youtube. I like your strategies and the strategy I use besides online help is to try some practice problems from the book or review my notes.
